Lance Stephenson eliminates UNC; Kenny Boynton photos

June 1, 2008

It’s been thought for some time that Lance Stephenson [6’5″, SG, 2009] was no longer considering the Tar Heels, and now it’s been confirmed. His list is down to UCLA, USC and Kansas.

Justin Watts commits to UNC

May 21, 2008

The 2008 recruiting period is not over, and yesterday UNC signed Justin Watt (SG, 6’5″) out of Durham (reported by Scout.com). Watt is a four-year player who will probably help shore up the deficit left by Wayne Ellington.

Watts is listed as a forward by most sites, but his ballhandling is strong and he can slash to the basket. I would assume that would make him more of a Marcus Ginyard type player than an Ellington player, but I have not seen enough of him to really make that assessment. Time to tap my buddy’s player database again, I think.

Henry drops UNC from list; Wall new #1

May 17, 2008

John Wall now #1

Rival.com has updated their 2009 rankings and now has NC State target John Wall (6’3″, PG) as their #1 overall player.

Xavier Henry drops UNC

In a move that surprises no one, Xavier Henry (6’6″, SG), has dropped UNC from his list of considered schools. UNC has focused for a while on Nolan Dennis (6’5″, SG), and they already have Dexter Strickland(6’3″, PG\SG), so it’s probably more an attempt to load up at positions. The other thing I notice about the SG recruiting is that it seems like the top three for every one of these players is UNC, Kansas and Memphis.

Lorenzo Brown

One name I’ve not yet mentioned is Lorenzo Brown (6’5″, SG), a guy who seems to be leaning toward NC State. I’m going to have more on Brown in the near future.

Sign Up for the ACC Basketball Recruiting List (Secret Sauce Edition)

May 8, 2008

So I’ll get to the point: I come across a lot of information and not all of it can go into the blog. Sometimes, it’s because there is so much going on that there just isn’t time to add it, and I don’t like making multiple posts in a day if I can help it.

Other times, it’s because I pass along rumors and I only want to pass those along to people who are savvy enough to understand that.

The ‘Secret Sauce’

Sometimes I send out recruiting updates, player evaluations or analysis to people who are interested in the basketball recruiting in the ACC. Sometimes I might come across some cool magazine or video. This list is for hardcore fans and recruiting junkies. You might say it’s for people who are looking at what makes up the ‘secret sauce’ in the next national college basketball powerhouse, or the next NBA phenom.

To sign up, click here.

Don’t forget that when I release the 2008 ACC Basketball Recruiting Yearbook, I will be sending it to people on the list free of charge. It’s scheduled for release by the end of June 2008.

My guarantee about getting Magic Johnson to personally meet everyone on my list is still valid.

Class Rankings and UNC Targets

May 6, 2008

With some players at UNC “testing the waters” about going pro, and with the bevy of big men that UNC is bringing in for 2008 and 2009, CarolinaBBall points out that the Tar Heels are almost exclusively recruiting wings at this point.

Video: Derrick Favors Interview

April 13, 2008

Everybody’s #1, 6’8″ PF/C Derrick Favors of the 2009 class is featured in this video interview. He comes across as a very grounded young man, mentioning his defense and rebounding more than anything else.

As of this writing, the ACC schools pursuing Favors are reportedly Duke, Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and North Carolina State.
