John Wall says ‘Not So Fast’ on Baylor

August 15, 2008

Everybody thinks Wall is headed to Baylor, but he says no decision has been made, and Alex spoke with Wall to get the scoop, and he says he is still open:

There was thought that the Bears hired Clifton specifically to got Wall, but John says that he thinks Scott Drew and Co. hired him because “they . . . thought he was a good man.” Regardless of the reason why Baylor hired Clifton, does that give the program a major lead to land the talented point guard from Word of God (NC)? “No, no, they’re not the top choice,” said Wall of Baylor, also adding, “I’m still wide-open.”

ACC Basketball Recruiting Roundup

July 30, 2008

Lots and lots of news today…

Earnest Ross video

Several ACC teams are watching NC player Earnest Ross (PG/SG, 6’4″, 2009), including Boston College and Clemson. Here’s some video of the player from Panther Creek:

Meyers Leonard commits

Just a couple of days ago we added Meyers Leonard (PF/C,6’11”,2010) to our ACC Targets list, and now he’s already committed to Illinois.

Michael Snaer: down to two?

Rumors abound that west coast guard Michael Snaer (SG, 6’5″ ,2009) is no longer considering UCLA, and that Mizzou and FSU are the two contenders.

John Langford commits

Josh Langford (SG, 6’6″, 2010) also has decided not to play in the ACC and committed to Louisville. I’m not sure how seriously Langford was considering any ACC schools.

Doron Lamb

By all accounts, Doron Lamb (SG, 6’4″, 2010) is going to be one of the best players in the class of 2010 and will get a whole bevy of offers. However, Alex is reporting that at this time, only Duke has not offered. (Updated: corrected)

Cody Shuffler

While Meyers Leonard is being taken off the board, we’re adding Cody Shuffler (SF/PF, 6’7″, 2009) to the list, as NC State has expressed interest. Shuffler is somewhat under-the-radar for ACC fans, but he’s one to keep an eye on.

Kenny Boynton

Duke fans are in a holding pattern on Boynton, where Florida and Duke seem to be the only two Boynton is considering

Aaron Dotson with Miami offer

USA Today is reporting that Aaron Dotson (SG/SF, 6’4″, 2009) has an offer from Miami. (It’s at the bottom of the Derrick Favors article, which is also a good read.)

Lorenzo Brown finally commits to Wolfpack

July 27, 2008

Lorenzo Brown (PG/SG, 6’4″, 2009) finally made it official and chose the Wolfpack. A great commit for Sidney Lowe, who had been leaning to the Pack for a while.

Brown is a ‘real’ combo guard; meaning, not really a pure PG and not really a pure SG. A lot of times, players will try to play a ‘smaller’ position, such as a SG playing point, but those combo guards are really players slightly out of position. Brown is really a combo guard, who has some PG skills, such as passing and court vision, and he can slash and shoot like a SG.

Maryland may miss out on Taylor

July 11, 2008

I meant to post this a few days ago, but Dante Taylor (PF, 6’8″, 2009) seems to really like Pittsburgh. If that holds true, then Maryland would be on the outside looking in for an in-state recruit, something Terp fans don’t want to hear right now. But these things can shift quickly, so you never know.

Kenny Boynton lives up to the hype

Duke target Kenny Boynton(PG/SG, 6’2″, 2009) is making headlines at the Reebok Camp. According to the story, Boynton has become a ‘lock’ to be named a McDonald’s All American.

Duke Basketball Recruiting is changing

This article from the Omaha World-Herald talks in depth about how Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski has had to change how he recruits:

Though Krzyzewski includes former Duke stars Grant Hill and Jason Williams in the same talent category as U.S. team members Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard, he said there was a time Duke avoided guys with the NBA in their eyes.

“Because they didn’t want to go to college,” he said. “Now that pool has to be recruited. But you still have to be careful to recruit the right ones.”

John Wall Update

At one time it was widely thought that Wall would end up at Memphis, but, to put it tactfully, “things have changed”. Wall’s new trimmed list includes Oregon, Oklahoma State and Baylor.

However, as recently as two days ago, Wall added Kansas, Kentucky and N.C. State. Interesting.

Lorenzo Brown, Wolfpack bound?

June 16, 2008

Trying to read the tea leaves in recruiting is about as accurate as trying to guess which Hollywood star is going to enter the Betty Ford center in two years. But I thought I’d take a moment to point out that Lorenzo Brown (6’4″, PG, 2009) has visited the state of North Carolina three times in the past month; once for the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (which was unscheduled AND he had to tag along with another AAU team), the Chris Paul skills camp in Winston-Salem and now the NC State elite camp. I know Wolfpackers are really hoping Sidney Lowe can close the deal on Brown, and he certainly seems to like things in North Carolina, or at the very least is doing a very good job of learning as much as he can about the area and NC State.

Even though Brown is a top player who will see significant minutes and has gotten offers from schools like Florida and Memphis, the ACC hasn’t really poured out offers for Brown. I have not read of a single ACC school with a confirmed offer except the Pack. So it stands to reason that Brown’s visits to NC are related to the Wolfpack offer.

Brown certainly fits the profile of recent Lowe recruits, versatile decision makers with a strong mid range game. It was pretty obvious last season that the Wolfpack had issues with poise and running the offense, and their best floor general was a big man. Lowe’s recruits in 2008 should help, and if he secures Brown it will further the cause.

Derrick Favors and NC State

May 30, 2008

Derrick Favors has said repeatedly that he currently has no leader and that he has not started to narrow his prospective list yet. In addition to that, he’s reportedly started looking at schools outside the SEC and ACC. Still, in a recent article by Rivals, it seems that the popular opinion right now is that Favors is still leaning towards staying in the state of Georgia.

However, the current opinion also holds is that if Favors had a list, it would be Georgia, Georgia Tech and NC State. Favors states that he may begin to focus more on where he wants to go in June.

ACC Basketball Recruiting Roundup, 5/24/2008

May 24, 2008

Mason Plumlee excites Cameron

Future Duke big man Mason Plumlee (6’11”, PF, 2009) enticed fans at Cameron Indoor on Friday with a 14 point outing during his debut on Coach K Court.

Lorenzo Brown and NC State

Lorenzo Brown (6’5″, G, 2009) is an excellent guard and I’ve mentioned before that he seems to be leaning toward NC State, and a lot of Pack fans would like to see him commit while he’s playing in Raliegh this weekend.

Kenny Boynton scores 33

Duke and Miami target Kenny Boynton (6’2″, G) is one of the best guards in the class of 2009 and he put up 33 points in his TOC opener.

John Wall making a run at #1

May 12, 2008

John Wall (6’3″, PG) is establishing himself as the top point guard in the Class of 2009, with the latest being a great showing at the Cactus Classic in Arizona.

Is John Wall the best player in the 2009 class? I still see it as Derrick Favors (6’10”, PF), but Wall has become an elite player with big league potential. He’s explosive as he pushes the ball up the floor. NC State is reportedly pursuing Wall heavily.
