Michael Snaer is Still Looking; Robinson Trims List

August 7, 2008

Maybe you heard that Michael Snaer (SG/SF, 6’5″, 2009) was about to make a decision to play for Missouri. Or maybe you heard that he was about to choose Florida State. You probably also heard that UCLA was out of it.

None of it is apparently accurate:

There have been rumors in the past week that Snaer had already reached a decision. One had him headed to Missouri, where he’s attended the Tigers’ Elite Camp the past two seasons and where AAU coach with Inland Reebok, Elvert “Kool-Aid” Perry, has a long-standing relationship with associate head coach Melvin Watkins. Another had Snaer heading to Florida State.

“He’s emphatically denied both of those,” Showalter said. “They just got started somewhere, and I don’t even think it was anything that he said to anybody. I think somebody just got it going.”

Note that Snaer is going to visit UCLA to talk with Ben Howland as well.

Thomas Robinson down to five

Thomas Robinson (PF, 6’8″, 2009) has cut his list to five and the only ACC school still being considered is Miami, along with Memphis, USC, Kansas and Texas. Robinson does have an offer from the Hurricanes.

The Obligatory John Wall Update

NBADraft.net has an interview with John Wall (PG, 6’4″, 2009), everybody’s top choice to be one-and-done in 2010. The interview is lenghthy, does not mention the current thinking that he’s a Baylor lock, but does offer this tidbit which gave me a chuckle:

Q: OK, you’re playing a 3-on-3 tournament at Rucker Park and you can take any two teammates to run with you. Who are you running with?

A: Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant. Nobody would beat us.

Heck, if I had Iverson and Bryant, I think I could play anyone, too. I can pass and set screens as well as anyone.

Under the Radar: Rodney Blount

August 5, 2008

To be honest, it’s a little surprising that Rodney Blount (PG/SG, 6’0″, 2009) isn’t listed on any of the major recruiting sites, despite having played at the 2008 Reebok All American Camp and regularly training and working out with Mr. Reebok Pump himself, former NBA player Dee Brown.

Rodney Blount

Blount has the size to play guard at the college level, can handle the ball and shoot. A skilled combo guard, Blount is apparently completely under the radar with only a couple of schools really following him. He’s got good court awareness as well, and plays his high school ball at Ocoee High School in Ocoee, FL. A player that could play for a lot of schools, but hasn’t gotten the looks he should be getting.

With looks from American University and Brevard already, he’s also interested in Alabama, Ole Miss,Auburn, FSU, UCF, Jacksonville, Villanova, Maryland and Michigan.

Here is some video of his solid play:

Michael Snaer’s List of Schools

June 5, 2008

Scout.com is reporting that Michael Snaer (6’4″, SG/SF, 2009) has several schools on his current list, including Stanford, Marquette, Florida State, Missouri, UNLV, USC, UCLA,Washington, Kansas, Arizona and Cal.

Snaer, a west coast kid, reportedly has offers from ACC schools Miami and Florida State.

Emmanuel Negedu’s visit to Indiana

Doug Wilson and Chris Korman have a fantastic update on Emmanuel Negedu (6’7″, PF, 2008 ) and his visit to Indiana:

So the Indiana visit, I’ve been told, is much more of a fact-finding visit for Negedu. You’ve heard kids talk about the “feeling” they get about a school, and that’s what so many of them are hoping to find when they step on campus. So coaches do whatever they can to create the feeling: they show off the banners, they drive through the campus on golf carts, they hang a jersey with the prospect’s number in the middle stall of the locker room.

More Bad News for Maryland Terrapins

Recently Gary Williams lost troubled recruit Tyree Evans, and now it appears he’s losing another. Gus Glichrist (6’9″, PF, 2008 ) has asked for a release from his LOI with the Terps.

Cheek still interested in Wake, Negedu to visit IU

May 28, 2008

Dominic Cheek (6’6″, SG, 2009 ) may be off the UNC radar, but he’s still on the Wake Forest prospect list, and he’s certainly interested in the Demon Deacons, according to this interview at Rivals.

Negedu sets up Indiana visit

Emmanuel Negedu ( 6’7″, PF, 2008 ), a Georgia Tech recruit has set up a visit at Indiana for June 3.

Scout.com is reporting that following his Indiana visit, Negedu will visit Georgia Tech on the 8th, Tennessee on the 10th and Memphis on the 12th.

Daniel Orton no longer considering ACC

According to several recent news reports like this one, Daniel Orton ( 6’10”, C, 2009 ), is no longer considering any ACC schools, with his list now consisting of Oklahoma, Ohio State, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA and USC. Too bad for Maryland, who could have used Orton’s physical presence inside.

Brandon Knight

Amazingly, Brandon Knight ( 6’3″, SG, 2010 ) plays in the same backcourt as Kenny Boynton (6’2″, SG, 2009 ), and still has emerged as a spectacular player and lists several ACC schools that are interested, including Florida State, Georgia Tech and Clemson.

Sign Up for the ACC Basketball Recruiting List (Secret Sauce Edition)

May 8, 2008

So I’ll get to the point: I come across a lot of information and not all of it can go into the blog. Sometimes, it’s because there is so much going on that there just isn’t time to add it, and I don’t like making multiple posts in a day if I can help it.

Other times, it’s because I pass along rumors and I only want to pass those along to people who are savvy enough to understand that.

The ‘Secret Sauce’

Sometimes I send out recruiting updates, player evaluations or analysis to people who are interested in the basketball recruiting in the ACC. Sometimes I might come across some cool magazine or video. This list is for hardcore fans and recruiting junkies. You might say it’s for people who are looking at what makes up the ‘secret sauce’ in the next national college basketball powerhouse, or the next NBA phenom.

To sign up, click here.

Don’t forget that when I release the 2008 ACC Basketball Recruiting Yearbook, I will be sending it to people on the list free of charge. It’s scheduled for release by the end of June 2008.

My guarantee about getting Magic Johnson to personally meet everyone on my list is still valid.

Top Ten 2009 ACC High School Basketball Targets

May 2, 2008

These are my current top ten players who have either been contacted by an ACC school, offered a scholarship by an ACC school or committed to an ACC school. The ACC schools that are in the mix are in parenthesis next to the player’s name. This does not mean that ACC schools lead for these players OR that the order of listings is indication of a leader among the schools.

1. Derrick Favors, 6’9” C (Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State)

2. Xavier Henry, 6’6” SG (North Carolina)

3. Kenny Boynton, 6’2” SG (Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Miami)

4. John Wall, 6’3”, PG (Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia)

5. Dominic Cheek, 6’6” SG (North Carolina, Miami)

6. Daniel Orton, 6’9” C (Maryland, Wake Forest)

7. Dexter Strickland, 6’3” SG (Committed to North Carolina)

8. Jordan Hamilton, 6’7” SF (North Carolina State)

9. John Henson, 6’10” PF (Committed to North Carolina)

10. DeShawn Painter, 6’9” PF (Clemson, Florida State, NC State, Virginia)

A notable exception here is Lance Stephenson (6’5” SF), who is #2 on many rankings and is often tagged as being a UNC target. I am pretty much of the opinion that UNC is not actively recruiting Stephenson, so until I see or hear otherwise (send me a link if you’ve got something), I am dropping him from my list of ACC targets. This moves Xavier Henry (who I think is leaning towards Memphis and Kansas over UNC) into my #2 spot, and introduces target DeShawn Painter into the top 10.

I also am not adding DeShonte Riley (6’10” C) to the mix even though he’s listed Boston College as a possible school. I kind of like DeShawn Painter a little more at this point.

These rankings may change as I get to see more of these guys, either in person or on video.

UPDATE, 7/1/208:After I posted this back in May, 2008, there have been a lot of changes and commitments. So if you want to keep up when the player DB comes online, click here.

Kenny Boynton at the Real Deal

April 21, 2008

ACC target Kenny Boynton was named the MVP of The Real Deal on the Hill, which took place in Arkansas this weekend. Boynton, a 6’2″ PG from Florida is reportedly very high on the Duke Blue Devils’ coveted list as well as Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami and Wake Forest.

Boynton has stated that he has no leader at this time.
