It’s been common thinking (whatever that’s worth, I guess) that Kenny Boynton (PG/SG, 6’2″, 2009) is down to two choices, with those two being Duke and Florida. However, Alex has a long interview with Boynton in which he states that the most important factor is his relationship with the coach, and even though Duke is recruiting him the hardest, he currently has better relationships with other coaches:
NB: Which coaches would you say you have the best relationship with right now?
KB: I’m going to say . . . CY, [Assistant] Coach Charlton Young from Georgia Tech, [Head] Coach Billy Donovan [from Florida], and [Assistant] Coach [Russell] Springmann from Texas.NB: So, that left Duke and Memphis out of the list. Does that [make] them maybe a little bit lower down?
KB: No, Duke actually comes at me the hardest when they [are] here, but I just feel like I have a better relationship with those coaches, but they definitely come at me the hardest.
Kenny says that this is not related to the time that Coach K spent coaching the Olympic team, but it does (from Alex’s interview alone) sound like he might (sorry, Kenny, if I’m reading too much into this) be laying some groundwork for choosing another school. However, that is pure speculation on my part.
It’s also interesting to note that Texas and Georgia Tech are mentioned, but that his relationships there are primarily with assistant coaches, while his relationship with Florida is with head coach Billy Donavon.
One thing is certain, Boynton is a great player who will be an asset regardless of where he ends up.
